Boudhanath Prayer Flags - On Halloween Night...

Himalayan Homecoming

We're taking our family back to South Asia for a Fall Semester Sabbatical! Ever since our 2007 Fulbright semester in India, we've been saving up and planning for our return. We will enroll our own daughters, and teach at Manasarovar Academy, a charity school in Kathmandu serving children of Tibetan refugee families. Paul was granted unpaid leave from his teaching job, and Karen departed one month early from her summer park ranger position. We will visit friends in Bangalore & Delhi, then head to Nepal for 3 months. En route home, we'll spend a week in Thailand, snorkeling and eating green curry all day...

It is a dream come true to return to the Himalaya after 8 years away... Karen and I were fortunate enough to lead treks in Nepal each Fall for several years, and we've been aching to get back. Eliza, now 12, doesn't remember much from her first Langtang trek when she was still in diapers!

In Kathmandu we'll be volunteer teaching Math, Science & English at Manasarovar Academy, a primary school that provides a quality education to Tibetan refugees and underprivileged students from remote Himalayan villages. Our daughters will enroll in the school, and we'll supplement their studies to keep them up to speed for our return home... There will also be time for a trek or two, temple visits, rafting, elephant safaris, and Nepal's wonderful Fall festivals.

We hope to post photos and stories to the blog weekly (at least!), so check back for updates!
